“Have You Eaten Yet?” Interactive Application

As a part of the Museum of Vancouver’s A Seat at the Table exhibition, Have You Eaten Yet? focuses on the myriad of Chinese dialects speaking a common phrase, “你吃了吗?”, which translates to “Have you eaten yet?”

Have You Eaten Yet? incorporates an interactive map that showcases not only all 34 originating regions of each dialect, but also some of their most famous dishes in beautiful illustrations.

Since its launch, the A Seat at the Table exhibition has been awarded a Public History Prize by the Canadian Historical Association.

The exhibition was on display at the MOV until April 2023. You can access a virtual tour of it here.

Open Project
Brief

Create an audio-focused interactive app with enticing visuals for museumgoers of all ages.

Initially provided with 17 audio files for various chinese dialects, the team had to prioritize how to make a mainly audial experience visually interesting.

Given the diversity of the Chinese diaspora in the Greater Vancouver Area, and the fact that Chinese culture is so famous for its cuisine, we decided to play on the titular phrase of the project “Have You Eaten Yet?” and showcase unique dishes from each region in China while also sourcing audio to show a full scope of all 34 regions.

OUR GOAL

Create an educational and informative experience that sits inside a larger exhibit.

User Interface

Functional and welcoming design

The iPad running our application is sitting inside a larger exhibit. Users may spend a very short amount of time playing with the application. We wanted to make it as simple to use as possible for museumgoers of all ages.
